University of Mauritius Lazy Administration and Rules

I have am going back to UOM this semester like many others for my MSc… and I have to say that the rules still suck as they did many years ago… Come on 80% attendance for postgraduate courses? Is it a joke… Many will not be able to make it to the lectures (not easy to get releases)… And their timetables… No communication from the administration prior to their when exactly the course if going to start… I mean, not even an email (do they even know how to email)…
The admin’s biggest fault is that they don’t understand your point. They couldn’t care less that you have to take loans to pay the nearly 80K per year for an MSc or 100K for MBA… They want instant payment even if they give you only 1 day to make arrangements for it… They of all people should know about these things… Blame the Mauritius Post for the delay if you want (that’s another debate), but they still could have emailed you instantly, afterall, you can put your email in the application…
I have to say that the lecturers have improved. They want to change the university for better, fairer principles but are getting stopped somewhere… I’m not saying that there are no lazy lecturers, they’re still here! But it’s good that most are not.
UOM has also has a SLOW and ARCHAIC website (actually a shame for such a university, if you compare to Europe, yes we should compare to Europe cause many of their professional grade websites are designed in Mauritius!) .

Priscus also blogged about another problem faces by post-grads in UoM: inadequate transport facilities

You’re right. And today right now as I write this comment another fear is in the mind of UOM students… why the government or UOM administration are not saying anything concerning h1n1.
Last week among friends reports, 5 students went home from UOM due to flu symptoms. We don’t know more as statistics are only for school students.
Yet nothing about this yet. As for the UOM website, I had written a pwnage post about them some time ago. From what I could gather from contacts in there is that they were so ashamed of their own CITS dept that to justify their foolishness and incapacity to do worth things they started pointing grammatical mistakes in my English lol.
‘As if I blog to participate in an English Vocabulary contest”.

Yeah it’s true that they do not allow much time to make the payments.

True about transport facilities. Some have to leave early during lectures to catch the bus… sinon, once it’s dark, and one of my contacts has seen thieves in Reduit… NTC is another lazy institute (they don’t seem to service their bus as needed, nor put enough buses where needed! Just compare their buses and recent timings to UBS, TBS or other companies…)
CITS, what to say… tell them you’ve lost your email password and they’ll email you the password to that same email account!

Well some people say that the 80% attendance is to ensure that the level of the postgrad does not become cheap and that without it, attendance would be so low that it’d be havoc to manage or lecture…

this is just a b**shit for a post graduate course. if the student can study by himself and be present in the exam as due why should he attend the class?
if he can pass the exam without being in the class there is no need for him to be in …

Well post grad isn’t about exams! if you think so, you’re missing the whole point of doing your MBA. We’re not talking degree level (even there, being exam oriented can be bad for your professional life).
On the other hand, MBA students are usually employed full-time (97% of my class) and obviously, most of them are in the private sector with long working hours. It’s not practical to expect that level of attendance. If they can manage to complete their MBA as expected without that level of attendance, it’s good for them and the uni.

little correction… while most are in private sector, roughly 30% come from public institutions…
