I decided to have a few speed test to verify if Orange people would really be working on a Sunday to do the switching to faster speed…It’s Sunday 1 March… 15h00 let’s go on http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ one of the reliable speed tests out there, and make a few tests. I made 4-5 tests which gave me over 500kbps almost every time. And 370kbps 1 time. That’s pretty good… But I still have to test on Rapidshare and see what it gives.

The first offer – ADSL 512k limited to 3GB at only Rs 499 (including VAT) is, I must agree, I very good offer for all those students and people who can’t afford more for internet. But beware that they will not be able to download often with that kind of limit. My brother for example, uses 20-30GB per month! (that would cost him over Rs 5000/month)… On the other hand, if you only do research, email (I use only 100-200MB/month in email) and stay 24/24 on MSN/Yahoo/Skype… then this offer is for you! There is always a catch… you can’t get that speed and ADSL everywhere.. can you? It’s just the nature of the analogue phone line… so it’s not 100% accessible… Remains to compare with Emtel’s mobile broadband offer at only Rs 459 per month for up to 1.8Mbps (but capped at 1GB and Rs 2.22/extra MB and initial cost of 5k)… Which give the peak speed only in regions with 3.5G coverage…

Checking out the dial up packages on Orange.mu I came across something that I knew for a long time with competing ISPs… Orange’s “web accelerator” works on dial up (312 1212). Finally, they decided to give that out… Can you imagine that I have been using Nomad Booster (NetClient) 5 years ago when Nomad still offered it’s dial up service! At that time, it was already offering the surfing speed of an ADSL 128 on a normal 56k V92 dial up… Almost nobody knew about it… And MT closed their eyes to that technology, refusing to copy until now… But if you plan to use more than the 12 hours package (comes to Rs 350/month), I really do recommend ADSL 256 3GB…

I have applied nearly 2 months ago for a telephone line (no, I don’t have one in my new house yet), when it’s supposed to be 3-6 weeks according to agents on their 8902#1#1 Hotline.

“No, you can’t apply for MyT and a telephone line at the same time!” said the lazy-looking lady who even prevented me from filling my application form properly at the Flacq branch of Orange. “Those sections are to be filled after technicians install the line. After that you can apply for MyT and they’ll do line conversion and all.”

Now how silly is that. I just want MyT, not your analogue phone line. Install it digital directly – why do the conversion after installing. I have my Emtel phone and I love the service (yeah, I know about the signal problems, but Video Call, Delivery Notification and fast mobile internet are unique retainers), so I won’t be using their phone…

Now come on, does everyone need to go via the corrupted way to get a phone line from Orange? I do have a few contacts there (and many friends too), but just wanted do it straight. They’ve just left me with no other choice than to talk to them… Lazy people… This week I called and told them myself that I found the box near my house and there’s only 1 connection to it. I was told a technician would come… day before yesterday. Where’s he/she? If this goes on, I’ll simply complain at the ICTA for refusal to give service…
